Kidsmart – October 2015

It’s no secret that spending time outdoors is good for your health and well-being. From taking in fresh air during a walk through the park to taking advantage of the outdoor recreation facilities in your community, getting outside does a body good. In the context of the nation’s obesity epidemic, parks and recreation spaces provide outlets for Americans to have much-needed physical activity with swimming pools, bike trails and various sports fields. Some communities even feature parks with amenities to encourage year-round use, such as plazas that feature ice skating rinks in the winter. Beyond the mental health benefits associated with physical activity, spending time outdoors is good for the body, as well. Countless studies show the health benefits of nature when people who have been suffering from stress, sickness, or a trauma can spend quiet contemplative time in gardens or take to the mountains or woods to heal. In some communities, particularly in urban and low-income areas, playgrounds afford the only interaction many children have with nature. People who live in communities that are walkable, have access to bike trails and are near parks and green space have higher levels of health than those in communities lacking those amenities, according to Dr. Richard J. Jackson, former director of the National Center for Environmental Health and star of the PBS series “Designing Healthy Communities.” What you may not realize is that significant work and planning goes into creating outdoor spaces that promote physical and mental well-being. Landscape architects help communities maximize opportunities for daily exercise like walking and biking, as well as places that optimize mental and physical restoration, such as therapeutic gardens. Consider these tips to make the most of the active living designs, such as parks and plazas, in your community: • Mix up your routine so you take advantage of fresh scenery. Choose the path lined with trees shimmering their autumn colors or take a route that lets you appreciate the late season blooms in a manicured flower bed. • Get fit by exploring. The park closest to home may be most convenient, but venturing out to discover new outdoor recreation areas is a great way to keep active while enjoying a daily dose of nature. • Blend education and activity. Learning about the animals, such as birds, and all the vegetation that inhabit your favorite park makes it rewarding to enrich the body and the mind. • Think outside the box — box building, that is. Many parks and community centers offer outdoor versions of classes traditionally held inside. Yoga, aerobics, swimming, even group walks are possibilities worth exploring. • Remember to practice smart hydration: protect the environment by carrying a refillable water bottle that lets you keep thirst at bay and your body temperature in check. To learn more about how landscape architects design the environment to work for you, visit asla.org/design.

Sprouted grains have been popular among health food junkies for years, but they’ve only recently hit the mainstream, popping up everywhere from breads and cereals to restaurant menus. This hot new healthy ingredient has loads of nutritional benefits and is increasingly easy to find. But what exactly are sprouted grains? A sprouted grain is the beginning of a grain seed’s life cycle, before it becomes a mature plant. Given just the right temperature and moisture conditions, the outer layer will split open and a young shoot will sprout out of the grain, releasing vital nutrients and enzymes stored inside. Grain seeds are similar to long-term storage packages, designed to keep their goodness locked inside until conditions are right to grow a new plant. According to the Whole Grains Council, the sprouting process can increase the amount and availability of some vitamins (notably vitamin C) and minerals, making sprouted grains a potential nutrition powerhouse. “With the attention paid to gluten-free, a dark cloud has been surrounding whole grains for several years,” said registered dietitian, Kashi nutrition partner and author, Toby Amidor. “Unless you have celiac disease or other individual needs, whole grains — including sprouted grains — are an important part of a healthy diet.” “Sprouted grains are a delicious way to add fiber and essential minerals such as iron, zinc or magnesium to your diet,” continued Amidor. “They aren’t just for the serious health food aficionados anymore — many new packaged foods feature these unique and nutritious grains.” Eating real, pure foods is at the core of a healthy lifestyle. By taking a closer look at packaging while at the grocery store, you can find items made with wholesome ingredients and positive benefits. These days, many grocery stores carry a variety of nutritious options on their shelves as well. “People don’t always check the nutrition label while they’re shopping,” says Amidor. “Take a moment to pause and read the labels to get the full picture and really understand the foods that are going into your grocery basket and onto the family table.” For tasty and nutritious food and recipe ideas, check out www.kashi.com and for additional nutrition information on whole grains, the Whole Grains Council is a great resource. The scoop on whole grains What are whole grains and what makes them so healthy? Simply put, they are small, edible seeds that come from grasses such as wheat and barley. Whole grains can be ground, cracked or flaked, and still retain their benefits. Here are three ways whole grains have a positive impact: • Healthy Weight: Packed with nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and fiber, whole grains contain some of the best elements to keep you on track when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. Research supports the notion that eating healthy amounts of fiber, which are found naturally in whole grains, helps people manage their weight. • Happy Heart: Consuming more plant foods, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, has been associated with reducing the risk of heart disease. • Positive Energy: Because whole grains are complex carbohydrates and they naturally contain fiber, they give you more nutrients per calorie than refined carbohydrates. It’s a better way to fuel your day! Nutrients unlocked Sprouted grains are a great way to obtain the essential minerals and fiber that help you feel good: • Iron carries oxygen. • Zinc nourishes skin. • Magnesium helps support bones. • Fiber aids digestion. Sprouted grains in your diet The daily recommended intake of whole grains is 48 grams, and the nutritional advantages of sprouted grains make them a great option to achieve this daily goal. Here are some ways to incorporate sprouted grains into your positive eating routine: • Sprinkle them into salads or stir fries. • Check grocery aisles for products with sprouted grains, like Kashi’s new Organic Promise Sprouted Grains cereal. • Use sprouted grain flours in your favorite baked goods or homemade pasta.

For most homeowners, sunny skies lead to more time spent enjoying nature in your coveted outdoor spaces. If you’ve considered revamping your open-air landscapes, let this be your season to bring the elements of beauty and design to the environment. Homeowners who want to enhance both the aesthetics and efficiency of their outdoor spaces are not alone. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), found that sustainable and low-maintenance designs are top trends among residential landscape projects. “The good news is that consumers care about designed landscapes that are attractive, easy to take care of and eco-friendly,” said Nancy Somerville, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA. “The survey shows that homeowners increasingly see opportunities to improve the environment right in their own backyard.” The study, which asked landscape architects to rate the expected popularity of outdoor design elements, points to a great demand for ecologically sensitive projects intended to preserve the environment, conserve water and reduce landscape maintenance. Here are the top five project types with the expected highest consumer demand: • Native plants (85 percent) • Native/adapted drought plants (83 percent) • Food/vegetable gardens (79 percent) • Fire pits/fireplaces (78 percent) • Low-maintenance landscapes (78 percent) Go with a pro If you’re ready to breathe these top design ideas into your outdoor spaces, consider hiring a pro. Here are the top five reasons for hiring a landscape architect for the job: 1. A landscape architect is well equipped to design an outdoor living space that will add value to your home, extend your living space and allow you to enjoy all that nature has to offer in a controlled setting. From arbors to fountains, they can create a space that is both inviting and environmentally sustainable. 2. Hiring a landscape architect is a terrific investment for your home. Research from Virginia Tech shows that landscapes literally grow in value over time, while traditional home additions or remodels start to lose value the minute the dust settles. 3. Landscape architects are licensed professionals who often work with landscaping or other construction companies to install their designs. Think of the fashion designer imagining an outfit while a clothing manufacturer makes the apparel, or an artist designing a wall poster that’s printed by another company. 4. Landscape architects are trained to think about landscapes as systems. They will assess your property’s problem areas as well as possibilities and create a solid plan that addresses both the big picture and exact details of how your landscape will look. They will handle all the details, saving you time and stress. 5. Landscape architects will deliver a finished project that you will love and that will comply with regulations and codes. It will be a special place that you and your family and friends will enjoy for years to come. For more landscape ideas for your home, and to find a professional in your area, visit www.asla.org.

What makes a healthy and satisfying snack for children? A well-balanced snack with good nutrition can help kids grow and provide them with the proper support and energy needed for school, sports and other daily activities. Parents have the best intentions when looking for nutritious options for their children, but challenges related to lack of access or knowledge of nutritious foods have contributed to an alarming trend. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity rates in the U.S. have more than doubled in the past 30 years, with over one-third of children currently overweight or obese. Kids and snacking A number of factors contribute to obesity rates, with snacking as a major culprit. While parents need to consider what they provide their children for three main meals a day, what they eat in between is equally important. Research by DuPont Nutrition & Health shows that children eat two to three snacks each day. Other studies confirm that American kids are consuming more than 700 calories in afternoon and evening snacks alone. Aside from the fact that these calories make up a substantial part of the total daily recommended caloric intake for children, most of the snacks commonly consumed by kids are high in saturated fats or simple sugars in the form of salty snacks, candy and beverages — such as fruit drinks — according to a University of North Carolina study. Parents face many practical challenges in providing healthful snack options to kids who are on-the-go and may not have access to refrigeration or re-heating capabilities. This often leads to snacks which lack the essential vitamins, minerals and protein a growing body needs. While snacking is essential to give kids the energy they need for the day, it’s important to provide snacks that contribute to daily intake goals of nutrients to support healthy growth and development. “For many parents, the primary reason for giving snacks to children is to stave off hunger until their next meal,” said Megan DeStefano, Global Strategic Marketing at DuPont Nutrition & Health. “When choosing a snack, parents should avoid those high in carbohydrates, such as simple sugars, since they tend to leave children feeling unsatisfied quickly and often craving additional unhealthy snacks.” Understanding better snacks It’s important for parents to know what to look for in a snack. For example, protein helps kids feel full longer, which may support weight management. In fact, numerous studies have confirmed that protein is more satisfying than either carbohydrates or fat. And lean proteins, such as soy, can meet needs to support growth and development without contributing to fat or cholesterol intake. It’s challenging for parents to determine what snacks are best. DeStefano shares some tips on healthful ingredients parents should look for in snack foods. Protein packs a powerful punch Vegetable proteins are a great way to consume protein without increasing the amount of saturated fats and cholesterol in your child’s diet. If you are considering vegetable proteins, try soy protein. Soy protein snack options can be found in a variety of tasty products such as ready-to-drink beverages, bars, cereals and dairy alternatives. Soy protein is also the only widely available vegetable protein that provides all the essential amino acids in the proper amounts that are needed to support growth and development of children. Parents can also rest easy knowing that soy protein delivers cardiovascular benefits as well. According to clinical research published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition conducted in both children and adults, soy protein has been shown to help reduce LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, increase HDL, also known as “good” cholesterol, and decrease triglyceride levels. Just 25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Find a fiber-filled option Fiber is another important ingredient to look for when looking for healthy snack options. Many kids are falling behind on their fiber intake. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children only consume half the amount of fiber that is recommended. For proper digestive health, it is recommended that children get 25–31 grams of dietary fiber per day. Snacking provides another opportunity to help kids to meet this goal. Including a fiber-rich food can also eliminate cravings for additional snacks. Snacking doesn’t have to be bad for your child’s health. There are several options that are tasty while delivering a healthy dose of cardiovascular or digestive benefits. With so many great possibilities, parents should continue to offer healthy snack options, with greater nutrient density to their children to help them stay energized throughout the day, while satisfying their hunger and taste. For more ways to get your family to make smarter snacking decisions, visit www.danisco.com.

For young minds looking into future career paths, the options are seemingly limitless, with professions to fit every talent and passion. From middle and high school students to incoming college freshman, finding the perfect college that fosters an engaging environment to forge ahead on their chosen path is essential. The following are questions to consider which will help define personal passions, skill sets and lifestyle needs — all important pieces of the puzzle. Identifying your interests While you don’t have to enter college with an exact plan for your future profession, being aware of your passions can certainly help. Consider the following questions to bring your interests to mind: • What topics excite you at school? • Do you have any interests or hobbies outside of school? Many colleges offer career planning courses to help guide entering students to the perfect college major. There are also various tests available to match a student’s interests with specific occupations. As you search, try not to limit yourself by thinking your passions can’t translate into successful careers. You may encounter occupations you weren’t aware of that put your interests to work in unexpected ways. For example, students with an appreciation for art and science and an interest in environmental issues may look into the world of landscape architecture. This profession plans, designs and manages a variety of small and large scale outdoor projects including parks, residential developments, campuses, urban plazas, streetscapes, waterfront developments and trail systems. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available; an undergraduate degree requires four to five years of study in design, construction techniques, art, history, natural and social sciences. To find out if your passions match with this rewarding industry, visit www.asla.org/yourpath. Identifying your abilities Equally important to your passions are your natural abilities, skills and talents to guide you to your profession. To help you think about your skills, consider these questions: • What classes do you succeed in? • Have you been acknowledged with any awards or recognition? Further research can help you match your skills into specific disciplines. For example, the skills required for a landscape architect include a combination of natural abilities and learned skills, such as an understanding of the arts and design elements; as well as a technical ability to translate a design into a built work. Formal education can help you develop the knowledge necessary to pursue professional work in this field. Recognizing value The perfect job will also support what you value in life. Consider these questions to determine your personal values: • What motivates you to do work? • Do you value working alone or with peers? While a job may sound good on paper, it is important to find one that fulfills you personally. Casting a wide net as you consider the possibilities may reveal fulfilling career options that let you focus on your values in ways you never imagined. Returning to the example of landscape architecture, this may be a good path of study if you are interested in melding creativity with science or attentive to environmental issues. Landscape architects play an important role in creating healthy environments and implementing projects that respect both the needs of people and the environment. Dig deep and ask yourself the important questions. Begin your college search with a basic understanding of your interests, skills and work values, and you’ll be on your way to the right profession. • ¿Has obtenido algún premio o reconocimiento?

Borrowing money can help you manage your way out of a tight spot, but doing so without knowing all the facts can make your finances even tighter in the long run. “When faced with a financial emergency, most people don’t think through how borrowing money might affect them down the line,” said Susie Irvine, president and CEO, American Financial Services Association Education Foundation. “With so many options available, it’s relatively easy to get a loan, but the impact on your credit and what it actually costs you over time can vary a great deal.” Two common forms of small-dollar borrowing are traditional installment loans (TIL) and payday loans. Understanding how each loan works can help you make the right decision for your financial situation. Traditional installment loans are used for various purposes, such as meeting family emergencies, purchasing home furnishings or consolidating other debts. These loans are generally short-term. Most traditional installment loans range from $500 to $3,500, with the borrower paying equal installments at regular intervals over a determined number of weeks, months or years. A typical monthly payment is around $125. With regular, manageable payments of principal and interest, the borrower has a clear roadmap out of debt. Payday loans are repaid in a single balloon payment at the end of the loan period. This payment is usually due in less than 30 days, most commonly 14 days. Payday lenders do not assess ability to repay, relying instead on a postdated check or on similar access to a borrower’s bank account as their assurance that the loan will be repaid. Although payday loans may appear to provide a quick and easy solution, a traditional installment loan is a more financially sound choice for most people. For more resources to help you better manage your money, visit www.afsaef.org. Is an Installment Loan Right for Me? When deciding whether to obtain an installment loan, consider the benefits and responsibilities. According to the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation, an installment loan: • Obligates future income. You’ll be required to set aside a certain amount of future income for loan payments. • Requires discipline. Borrowing wisely means not borrowing more than you can handle. Don’t let the thrill of buying or having a sum of cash obligate you to more than you can afford. • Makes it possible to meet unexpected expenses. The ability to borrow and make affordable payments can be helpful if an emergency arises that requires extra money. • Allows you to obtain products and services now and pay for them later. A loan can provide an opportunity to purchase bigger-ticket items and use them right away. Keys to Credit Success The American Financial Services Association Education Foundation offers this advice to help ensure that your interests are protected when you borrow money: Budget your money. Provide your monthly spending plan when you meet with creditors. It will help them make a responsible decision about the amount of credit you can afford. Shop, shop, shop. Compare the costs of credit from different creditors. Shop for credit as you would shop for anything else. Beware of “now or never” offers. If it’s a good deal, it will probably still be there after you’ve had time to think about it. Don’t be pressured into making a quick decision. Ask questions. Don’t sign on the line until all your questions have been answered. Read the contract. Don’t sign a contract that you don’t understand or has any blanks. A signed contract with blanks can be completed as anyone wishes, and it will be legally binding. Keep your contract in a safe place. It’s important to keep all paperwork relating to your credit obligations. If questions come up later, you’ll have your agreement in writing. Make your payments on time and in full. This is one of the best ways to build a good credit history. Repeated late payments will trigger late payment fees, and hurt your credit report, which will make it difficult to obtain future credit. Additional products are not required to get a consumer loan. Optional products that may be offered for purchase with your loan include motor club membership, term insurance or warranties. Terms to know When you take out a loan, it’s important to understand the complete cost of repaying the amount you’ve borrowed. It’s a good idea to compare offers from multiple creditors, and understanding these terms will help you calculate the real cost of borrowing to get the best deal. Here is a list of common terms from the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation. • Amount Financed: The total dollar amount of the credit that is provided to you. • Annual Percentage Rate or “APR”: A measure of the cost of credit expressed as a yearly rate. • Credit Insurance: Optional insurance that is designed to repay the debt if the borrower dies or becomes disabled. • Finance Charge: The dollar amount you pay to use credit. • Fixed Rate Financing: The interest rate and the payment remains the same over the life of the loan. Equal monthly payments of principal and interest are made until the debt is paid in full. • Length of Payment: The total number of months you have to pay the credit obligation. • Late Payment Fee: A fee that is charged when payment is made after its due date. • Monthly Payment Amount: The dollar amount due each month to repay the credit agreement.

Holding on to Your Car Tips for a safe, long-lasting vehicle While driving a new vehicle off the lot may sound tempting, the financial commitment it brings is not an option for most families. Instead, hanging on to your old set of wheels is the smarter choice for a number of reasons. Taking good care of your car not only improves safety and dependability, but also can have a positive impact on your wallet. “Hanging on to your current vehicle allows you to redirect money you would spend on a new car to pay off credit card debt, college loans and other bills; beef up savings or even take a road trip vacation,” said Rich White, executive director with the Car Care Council. “By simply budgeting the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance.” Even the cost of fixing a serious engine issue is a more sensible economic decision, added White. For the cost of an average down payment on a new car or truck, a vehicle can be repowered with a remanufactured or rebuilt engine and gain years of reliable service. “The bottom line is that a properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more valuable,” White added. The experts at the Car Care Council offer these 10 general tips for those looking to maintain the life of their vehicle: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze or coolant. 2. Check hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. 6. Check engine performance to make sure it is delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy and producing the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and safety. 8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually, including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. 10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. The next time you consider purchasing a new car, think about investing in the vehicle you already own for significant savings, as well as enhanced reliability and safety.

When you set out to make life changes, such as weight loss or adopting a more active lifestyle, it can be tempting to look for shortcuts that expedite your path toward your end goal. However, long-term success is more attainable for those who take a slow and steady approach that puts health first. “There are dozens of reasons people look to develop healthier eating habits, ranging from weight loss to disease prevention,” said Rene Ficek, registered dietitian and nutrition expert for Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating (SSHE). “Regardless of the motivation, success begins with a well-balanced eating plan that is based on sound nutrition and physical activity.” Ficek offers this advice to individuals looking for a new approach to eating: • Adopting a healthy diet is the key to successful, long-term weight loss. A healthy diet provides adequate calories and nutrients to support your body’s energy and nutritional needs while allowing you to shed an average of 1–2 pounds per week. • Be wary of diet plans that promise loss of five or more pounds per week, which is unrealistic and unhealthy. • Look for a meal plan that takes the guesswork out of eating right by serving calorie- and portion-controlled meals that reflect a well-balanced diet. • Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. If you have been primarily sedentary, start slowly with a moderate walk each day, working up to more aggressive cardiovascular exercise and weight training to develop muscle. • Find ways to make your new lifestyle as convenient as possible, such as meal programs that save on grocery shopping and cooking time or gyms that specialize in short, well-rounded workouts. Another important aspect of a successful weight loss program is a menu that incorporates high-quality ingredients to create an appetizing array of meals that adhere to current nutrition guidelines. Finding a menu that offers variety is a smart approach, Ficek says. “When you’re watching what you eat, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and eat the same foods repetitively. Unfortunately, that approach can backfire if you become bored with your food and gravitate toward options with new flavors that may be less nutritionally beneficial.” On the breakfast menu, SSHE offers options such as Strawberry Yogurt & Dark Chocolate-Berry Crunch Parfait, which features layers of strawberry Greek yogurt with orange-cherry-cranberry sauce and a decadent granola-berry-dark chocolate crunch. Or for lunch, the Pecan-Cranberry Mixed Greens Salad offers a fresh mix of salad greens, roasted pecan halves, Swiss cheese, dried cranberries and celery seed dressing served with a tomato juice sipper. Number Crunch Healthy eating means understanding and closely monitoring the calories and nutritional value of the foods you eat. The registered dieticians and research and development teams at Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating prepare meal plans that comply with the following nutrition guidelines: • Low in fat (25 percent calories from fat) • Low in saturated fat (less than 7 percent) • Low cholesterol (less than 200 mg) • Calorie-controlled (1,200; 1,500 vegetarian; or 2,000 per day) • Sodium-restricted (less than 1,500 mg/day on the 1,200 calorie plan) • No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils (zero trans fat) • Free of food dyes and harmful additives as preservative Meal Program Lets Senior Achieve Lifelong Goal Decades of weight loss and gain followed — as much as 400 pounds up and down through the years. Now, at 63, Janet Wilke is adopting healthier eating habits and learning exactly what and how much to eat. In May 2013, Wilke weighed in at 299.8 pounds. Just 15 months later, she achieved her goal weight of 150 pounds. Her secret? An eating plan that guides her to make healthy choices at each meal following a 1,200-calorie eating plan created by Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating (SSHE), a family-owned company based near Chicago. “In the past when I would lose weight, I would save my clothes just in case,” Wilke said. “This time, I am confident because I know exactly what to eat and how much and I feel fabulous. I have never felt as energetic and healthy as I do now, and the smaller size is a bonus.” Through SSHE, Wilke orders convenient and freshly prepared meals delivered to her home. A weekly menu consists of three meals per day, with both regular and vegetarian menu options available to provide a mix of vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and low-fat dairy products. “Now, I look for opportunities to move because I feel so ‘light’ and pain free,” Wilke said. “I can get up and down out of my chair almost effortlessly, and my sleep has improved as well. I have even given away all of my ‘too big’ clothes because I know that I will not regain the weight.”

Driving in the Dark Tips and tricks for navigating at night Although a lack of confidence while driving at night is most commonly associated with older drivers, new survey results reveal that drivers as young as 40 feel uncomfortable driving in dark, nighttime conditions. This time of year, when darkness falls earlier, means more low-light driving time for drivers of all ages, so it’s important to understand the factors that contribute to this discomfort, including one surprising culprit — your nutritional intake. Night driving is characterized by low-light conditions and glare from oncoming headlights that impact a driver’s vision and can have serious safety implications. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that vision provides as much as 85 percent of the information drivers need to make safe decisions behind the wheel. Results from a survey conducted by Toluna and EyePromise reinforce the importance of quality vision, with nearly one in four respondents reporting that if they could see better, they would feel safer driving at night. A problem with real consequences Concerns about safe driving at night and in low-light conditions are valid. According to the National Safety Council, traffic death rates are three times greater driving at night versus driving during the day. However, for many people, driving at night is not a choice. In the survey, one in five respondents said that, despite feeling anxious, they continue to drive at night out of necessity. Protect yourself behind the wheel The first step toward night driving safety is being aware of the issues that may disrupt a driver’s confidence behind the wheel. The vision issues related to night driving can be organized into three categories: low-light conditions, which affect contrast and the ability to gauge distance; glare, which may cause a period of blind driving and reaction time, which is reduced when visibility is hampered. You can also enhance your safety behind the wheel by adopting smart driving behaviors, such as driving slower at night and watching the white line on the road. The National Safety Council recommends drivers clean their headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows (inside and out) at least once a week. Research reveals there is an additional solution proven to directly address the major night driving vision concerns: protecting your vision quality at its source. Scientific studies show that nutrition has a significant impact on visual performance, specifically the nutrients zeaxanthin and lutein. Zeaxanthin and lutein are carotenoids that make up the macular pigment — the area of the eye responsible for protecting vision. Trace amounts can be found in foods like leafy greens, corn, eggs and red, orange and yellow peppers, but because it is difficult to get enough in the average American diet, optometrists recommend a nutritional supplement. EyePromise vizual EDGE is a once-daily softgel that features high levels of dietary zeaxanthin and is guaranteed to improve vision quality within three months. “It has been scientifically proven that high levels of dietary zeaxanthin taken in supplement form improve night driving visual performance,” said Dr. Dennis Gierhart, a foremost researcher on dietary zeaxanthin and founder of ZeaVision, one of the leading companies in ocular nutrition. Learn more about the impact vision has on night driving safety at www.eyepromise.com/nightdrivingvision. Common night driving pitfalls Low light: Low-light conditions make it harder for the eyes to see contrast and thus identify objects and gauge their distance. It is much more difficult for a person to make out an object or person in the street or to accurately measure how fast they are moving or how far away they are at night versus during the day. Glare disability and recovery: Glare and blinding light from an oncoming car’s headlights not only disable vision in the moment, but there is a period of time before the eyes recover where people are left driving blind. In fact, glare is one of the most common night driving vision issues, with one out of four respondents reporting that they feel unsafe driving at night due to glare, according to a survey by Toluna and EyePromise. Reaction time: Reaction time is slower at night. The National Safety Council reports that 90 percent of a driver’s reaction depends on vision, which is limited at night, so a person’s ability to spot danger and react is compromised. When considering the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s assertion that a typical driver makes 20 decisions per mile and has less than half a second to act to avoid a collision, it’s clear that hampered night vision poses serious danger. Take steps to improve your safety There are numerous ways you can proactively improve your safety while driving at night. The experts at EyePromise offer these suggestions: Practice safe driving • Make sure the windshield and headlights are clean. • Leave more distance between cars. • Use “night” setting on your interior rearview mirror. Improve your eyes with nutrition Research proves nutritional supplements high in dietary zeaxanthin (10 mg or above) and lutein protect and promote eye health to directly address major night driving vision issues. These nutrients help by improving contrast, reducing glare and improving recovery time. Trace amounts of these nutrients are found in foods like leafy greens, eggs, corn and orange and yellow peppers, but the best option is a natural supplement like EyePromise vizual EDGE, which features high levels of dietary zeaxanthin (14 mg) and lutein in a once-daily softgel. Schedule regular eye exams to monitor for vision issues A professional will be able to identify any issues with the aid of routine examinations.

With the new year underway, there is a heavy focus around resolutions. Whether you are making a resolution to celebrate a fresh start or looking to make a change no matter the time of year, maintaining resolutions can be difficult. In fact, a recent survey from Bank of America found that 49 percent of respondents don’t make New Year’s resolutions because they prefer to set goals throughout the year. Goals tied to the New Year, and those set at various points in the year, are all aimed at making significant life changes. According to the survey, 81 percent of resolutions involve health and fitness, 45 percent involve personal finances and 30 percent are targeted toward making changes in social life and relationships. With the large number of people planning to make changes in their finances, it is helpful to determine how to best ensure you achieve your goal. “I’ll be the first to admit keeping to a financial resolution takes a lot of hard work. It takes good behavior and good habits,” said Farnoosh Torabi, a consumer finance expert. “With life being so complicated, stressful and complex, we often abandon them. Get the systems in place — the small steps you need to take now — to help you get on the right track.” Research shows that consumers who understand their behaviors and motivations are more likely to build and keep positive habits for the long term. That’s why it’s so important to have strategies to keep those financial resolutions throughout the year. Below are few pointers to stick with your financial resolutions: Prepare before your resolution begins Putting thought into your resolutions before you spring into action can put you on the path to change. Starting early with a few small changes can also improve your odds of staying the course to achieve your goals. For example, if you’re looking to improve your financial health, begin by imagining a debt-free life. Visualizing how things may change can provide additional motivation you may need to move forward. Think about having more money available each month and how it would change your stress levels. Imagine what it would be like to not worry about meeting your payments, or saving more for retirement, education or emergencies. Thirty percent of survey respondents said they identify their New Year’s resolutions early as a way to stick with them throughout the year. Develop an action plan It’s fine to make a resolution, but the odds of sticking with it improve dramatically if you create an action plan of smaller steps to support your goals. If your number one resolution is to lose weight, your plan might include budgeting money for a gym membership and cleaning out any junk food from your pantry. Creating a budget? Start by tracking your spending to see where the money is going. Then create a budget that’s tight but workable, to give you more flexibility to pay down debt, increase savings or invest for retirement. If you have to carry a balance, but want to responsibly manage your credit card, consider a card that helps build positive habits. For example, Bank of America’s Better Balance Rewards card pays you to manage your credit card use. Every quarter that you pay more than your minimum balance on time, you earn $25 cash back. If you have at least one other qualifying account with Bank of America, you can receive another $5 bonus, totaling up to $30 a quarter. You’ll be eligible for up to $120 a year toward your balance, and you’ll feel better knowing how much you can spend each month. Write it down Forty percent of survey respondents say they use written reminders to help stay on track with their resolutions. Try writing your resolutions on Post-it notes, in Evernote, in calendar reminders or on notes stuck to the refrigerator — whatever you’ll look at regularly — to keep yourself committed and on track. Research shows that a written goal is more likely to be achieved. If your goal is managing your finances better, write a reminder on your daily calendar to check your credit card statements as they come in — it’s the best way to spot transactions you don’t recognize. Get a little help from your friends Sometimes a gentle reminder from a family member or friend can work wonders. Share your resolutions with a trusted person and ask for occasional reminders. Some 23 percent of survey respondents plan to enlist help this way. A friend may be able to coax you to going to the gym, or even talk you out of buying that handbag you’ve been eyeing that’s out of your budget. The key to cutting debt is to stop adding to it. If you’re in a hole, stop digging. Partner up Find a friend or loved one with the same resolution and agree to motivate and support one another to stick to your goals. It’s easier to manage a diet, exercise plan or budget if you have support. Twenty percent of respondents plan to partner up to keep to their resolutions. Start your New Year’s resolutions thinking today, and keep the big goals in mind every day, whether they aim for better health, sounder finances or better relationships. With the right attitude and commitment, 2015 could be a very good year. For more information, visit www.bankofamerica.com.
