Wildville – Dog Breeds

DOG BREEDS Like people, animals are different, too. For example, there are so many different breeds of dogs in the world that sometimes it can be hard to believe they are the same species. They can have different physical traits that are obvious to see like size, color, hair type and shape. They can also have very different personalities. These different traits are used to define dog breeds. Breeds are groups of dogs that have the same traits because of their genetic makeup. Unfortunately, sometimes specific breeds can come with bad traits, too. It is common for German shepherds to have hip dysplasia, which can be very painful as the dogs get older. ere are also mixed breeds, o en referred to as mutts. These dogs don’t t into a specific breed. The American Kennel Club recognizes 167 dog breeds. The eight American Kennel Club groups of dog breeds are sporting, hound, working, Terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding and miscellaneous. Dogs can vary in size from over 150 pounds to just two pounds. Many of the animals in animal shelters are purebred. The most popular breeds in the U.S. are: Labrador retriever, golden retriever, German shepherd, beagle and dachshund. All dogs are descended from wolves. The most popular breed in the world is the Labrador retriever. In the Middle Ages, Great Danes and mastiffs were sometimes used to help defend supplies in battle. Some even got their own armor. It is the differences in breeds that make dogs so special. O en these differences were chosen very specifically by the people breeding the dogs. For example, the Newfoundland breed has webbed feet and water-resistant hair. is makes them excellent at the job they were meant for: helping fisherman bring in their nets and saving drowning people. Collies are known for their intelligence and obedience, which is perfect for their job of herding animals like sheep. It is all these different traits and diversity that make dogs so useful, fun and interesting. Every dog is an individual, but considering the breed can be an important part of choosing a new pet.

Where in the World

Where In The World Is – The United Nations

Located in New York City, the United Nations, or the U.N. for short, was officially created in October 1945. This was right after World War II. All the countries were still struggling with the horror and expense of the war. e goal of creating the U.N. was to prevent any war like this from ever happening again. The idea was that the U.N. would create a space where nations could peacefully talk to each other about the problems they had instead of being violent. It also created international laws that were meant to force nations to try and peacefully solve their problems. e founders of the U.N. wanted to create a place where leaders could work together to protect citizens everywhere. Since 1945, the U.N. has changed some. It has grown and set some new goals. One of these goals is maintaining international peace and security, which means keeping nations from fighting each other. e U.N. also has set a goal to promote sustainable development. is means helping developing nations to grow in ways that are good for the people, the nation and the environment. e U.N. also protects human rights. is means that the leaders at the U.N. want to make sure that people all over the world are treated well and have basic rights — even if that means protecting them from their own government. These are just a few of the things that the United Nations does around the globe.

Letter From Truman – December 2016

Hi, Kids! One of my favorite things about this world is how different things are. Animals, plants, people and even buildings and cars are different. This makes the world an interesting place. But sometimes, when I am the one who feels different, all that variety doesn’t seem so great. My teacher tells our class that being different is what makes each of us special and that we should celebrate our differences. “Connections” talks about some pretty cool people are different, but they didn’t let that keep them from being successful! The “What’s It Like to Be …” section features Dawn Lehman. She is a cultural anthropologist. Cultural anthropologists study what humans think, believe, say and do. For example, they study how people work, play and eat and what they buy and create. She’s taken on some pretty interesting jobs in her field. One thing that people have always done is tell stories. “Cultural Connections” talks about folklore and how stories are passed down from one generation to the next. Sometimes these stories are meant to be entertaining, and other times, they are meant to teach us something. What is your favorite story?
