Making a volcano is a great project to try at home. It is completely safe, but it can be messy so you might want to create your volcano outdoors. Make sure you have an adult's permission before starting this project!
What you need: Damp sand or soil baking soda vinegar red food coloring cardboard, wood, or an old cookie sheet or other surface on which to form your volcano.
1. Mix about a half cup of vinegar with red food coloring. Keep adding food coloring until the vinegar is deep red.
2. Form your soil into a firm mound on the cardboard or cookie sheet.
3. Poke your finger into the top of the mound, forming a hole about an inch deep.
4. Place about a half teaspoon of baking soda into the hole.
5. Now for the eruption! Pour small amounts of your red vinegar into the hole. (A turkey baster works well for this, but is not necessary.) Watch your "lava" flow down the mountain!
You should have enough vinegar to create several eruptions. Just keep adding more baking soda, one half teaspoon at a time.
Why does the volcano bubble? The red "lava" flows out of the volcano because when the baking soda and vinegar mix, they produce a chemical reaction in which carbon dioxide is created. Carbon dioxide is the same gas that bubbles in a real volcano. When the gas bubbles, it forces the liquid "lava" to erupt out of the hole and down the sides.
