A Coachs Letter to His Son
Author/Illustrator: Mel Allen, John Thompson (Illustrator)
Publisher: The Creative Company
Age Range: 9 to 12
A Coachs Letter to His Son is a
touching letter from the author
expressing his regrets to his 12 year-old son. Baseball, the game they both once loved, has turned into rigorous practices and training videos. As the coach realizes the joy has left his sons face, he wonders if it is too late to get the magic back and just enjoy playing the game. Adults will
appreciate this story more than the young reader, but children will benefit from the reading as well and will hopefully realize the lesson in it. Realistic paintings by accomplished painter/illustrator John Thompson add to the nostalgic feel of the book. JK

Flashy, Clashy, and
Oh-So Splashy: Poems about Color
Author/Illustrator: Laura Purdie Salas
Publisher: Coughlan Publishing
Age Range: 5 to 8
Im flashy and clashy and beautifully splashy and everyone notices me! So goes the first verse of Orange You Jealous of My Color, a spunky poem accompanying a photo of orange traffic cones. One of 15 poems in this book of colorful poetry, the title poem sets the tone for the fun book featuring the wonderful colors of our world. The full-page, full-color photographs perfectly illustrate the poetry, or maybe the poems perfectly describe the brilliant photography! Either way, this book is a great introduction to poetry for young readers. The glossary in the back of the book explains the different types of poetry, from acrostic and cinquain to haiku and limerick. JK
