Dr. Seuss Horton Hears a Who (In Theaters March 14) The best-loved childrens book by Ted Geisel (AKA Dr. Seuss) gets an appropriately colorful and vibrant treatment with the aid of beautiful animation and expressive vocal performances from Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. A person is a person, no matter how small, is the lesson that the sensitive jungle elephant Horton learns and shares with other animals when he discovers a city of little people living on a dust speck that he protects on a piece of soft clover. The well-worn storys sheer poetry comes through in this masterpiece of kids cinema. Perfect. Rated G (20th Century Fox) Image Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
Iron Man (In Theaters May 2) Make way for the first comic book-inspired movie of the year. Robert Downey Jr. puts on the mighty red and gold costume for Marvels Iron Man super hero Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and inventor who builds a suit of armor that enables him to fly and blow stuff up. Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges star in this flashy and loud testament to the appeal of super heroes to save the world. Spectacle and humor abound in this eye-candy feast. Not Yet Rated (Paramount Pictures, Marvel Studios)
Nims Island (In Theaters April 4) The ever-delightful Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) stars in this fantasy/adventure movie about a smart little girl living a comfortable life on a secret island in the South Asiatic Sea with her dad Jack (Gerard Butler). When Nims father vanishes off the island, Nim writes to the author of her favorite Alex Rover adventure books, Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster), to help find her dad. Based on the novel by Wendy Orr and Kerry Millard, Nims Island is a tropical picture with a great cast and plenty of animal life. Rated PG for mild adventure action and brief language. (Fox Walden)
Speed Racer (In Theaters May 9) Originating from the Japanese cartoon Mach GoGoGo, Speed Racer gets a live action movie from directing brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski, who gave the world the Matrix movies. Rising star Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) plays a young man born to race cars, who challenges a shady racing system with the Mach 5 car that his dad Pops Racer (John Goodman) made for him. With the help of his loyal girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) and his one-time rival Racer X (Matthew Fox), Speed Racer takes on the biggest race of his career, a cross-country rally named The Crucible. Not Yet Rated (Warner Bros. Pictures)
Upcoming DVDs
Alvin and the Chipmunks (DVD release: April 1) Jason Lee plays songwriter Dave Seville who helps singing chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore become music stars overnight. The music biz is rough, and a fiendish record producer tries to take the gang for a ride at their expense. Evidently nobody ever told him that chimpmunks are feisty and smart and know how to have fun regardless of the circumstances. Rated PG (Fox)
The Water Horse - Legend of the Deep: Two-Disc Special Edition (DVD release: April 8) Magical realism gets some Loch Ness influence mixed up with some E.T. and a little Free Willy, in a WWII-era story where a boy named Angus MacMorrow (Alex Etel - Millions) and his family live as housekeepers in a huge Scottish manor. Angus makes friends with a mythic water horse as German troops threaten to advance through the area. Rated PG (Columbia Tri/Star)
Wee Willie Winkie (DVD release: April 22) The magic of Shirley Temple comes though in this 19th-century story about Priscilla Williams (played by Shirley), a little girl who goes to live with her grumpy British Army colonel grandfather at a war camp in India. Priscilla makes friends with the soldiers and prisoners alike before slipping into a dangerous adventure that could have a dramatic effect on the war. Guns are no competition with this kind of little-kid poise around. Rated G (20th Century Fox)
