 Come Out & Play
Baseball Q&A
Little League Baseball practices are starting up all over the country. So it's a great time to answer some of your questions about how to improve your game. Mickey Lay, one of the coaches that led the Warner Robins American Little League team to victory at the Little League World Series, was glad to answer a few questions.
Q. How can I learn to hit a home run? A. Learning good hitting fundamentals is the key; home runs are a by product of a good fundamental swing. Practice will give you a good swing.
Q. Sometimes I have to play catcher how can I get better at this position? I'm not crazy about that fast ball coming towards me! A. Catchers cannot fear the ball, so try the position out first to see if you like it. Watch other people at higher levels to see how they react in real game situations, for example, when a ball bounces. And like everything, practice always makes you better.
Q. When I am in the outfield, and a ball is hit out and high, what's the best way to catch it? I try to line up with it, but it just doesn't connect with my glove! A. Settle yourself underneath the ball. Your glove should be positioned at eye level and you should catch the ball at eye level.
Q. I want to be a pitcher. How can I improve my pitching skills so the coach will give me a chance at the mound? A. Go to the school library and get a book on pitching technique. Also, pitching instructors are everywhere these days and don't cost much. This would be a sound investment if you are really interested in learning how to pitch.
All these skills can be learned through joining your local youth baseball organization.
