D is for Drinking Gourd: An African American Alphabet Author/Illustrator: Nancy I. Sanders, E.B. Lewis (Illustrator) Publisher: Sleeping Bear Press Age Range: 6 to 12 D is for Drinking Gourd is part of the alphabet series published by Sleeping Bear Press. Like the other wonderful books in the series, this book is designed for readers at all levels. As each double-page spread addresses a letter of the alphabet, the short lyrical verse describes the letter as it relates to African American history. A detailed sidebar for older readers (and parents!) explains each topic with factual, interesting information. The large watercolor paintings by artist E.B. Lewis expertly capture the spirit and determination of the subjects. This book is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of our country and is one to keep on the shelves for reference as the years go by. JK
George Did It Author/Illustrator: Suzanne Tripp Jurmain, Larry Day (Illustrator) Publisher: Penguin Group Age Range: 7 to 10 From the publisher: George Washington was not afraid of responsibility. When the Colonies needed a commander-in-chief to build an army, George did it. And when they needed his army to fight the British, George did it. But when Americans asked George to be the first president of the brand-new United States, he politely said, NO, THANK YOU. Here is the whimsical story of how our first president tried to avoid his most important job. Filled with little-known and funny facts, this book reveals a more personal side of Washington -- a great leader who could also be a little nervous.
Celebrate Valentine's Day with Love, Cards and Candy Author/Illustrator: Carolyn Otto Publisher: National Geographic Society Age Range: 6 to 9 From the publisher: February 14 is the day reserved for celebrating love in its many forms around the world. Celebrate Valentine's Day focuses on historical and cultural aspects of this holiday and the international traditions, food and celebrations associated with it. This celebration of love includes fun facts; a recipe; a map showing the location of all photographs; a resource list of books, videos and Web sites; and a note from an expert consultant, aimed at parents and teachers, which deepens our understanding of the holiday's importance and meaning. The history of the holiday is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that Valentine's Day wasn't always a time for red roses, candy hearts and frilly greeting cards. Readers learn that some historians trace the feast of the patron saint of love to ancient Greek and Roman festivals that signaled the beginning of spring, which officially began in February in ancient Rome. According to one legend, St. Valentine was a priest imprisoned for defying the emperor. Before being put to death, he sent the first "valentine" a letter that he signed "From your Valentine," words still used on cards today.
