The ABC's of Fruits and Vegetables, and Beyond Authors/Illustrator: Steve Charney, David Goldbeck, Marie Burgaleta Larson (Illustrator) Publisher: Ceres Press Age Range: 5 to 10 What a terrific way to learn about fruits and veggies! This book is really two in one. The first part, the ABC's, is made up of a combination of clever poetry by Steve Charney, and funny illustrations. It takes you through the entire alphabet you'll even learn about fruits beginning with U and X! (Have you ever had an Ugli fruit?) Part two, "Beyond the ABC's: Food, Facts and Fun for Everyone," again goes through the alphabet, but in much more detail. Co-author and best-selling food writer David Goldbeck has really done his homework. Offering recipes, jokes and fun facts along the way, the book is delightful all the way around. JK
The Halloween Book of Facts and Fun Author/Illustrator: Wendie C. Old, Paige Billin-Frye (Illustrator) Publisher: Albert Whitman Age Range: 8 to 11 From the publisher: Every October 31, children and even some adults dress up in costumes. Some go door-to-door looking for a treat, some carve faces into pumpkins and others tell scary stories about Dracula and Frankenstein. But where do these traditions come from? Wendie Old gets to the bottom of these and other questions in her informative and witty nonfiction picture book. Halloween riddles and ideas for throwing a Halloween party are included. Paige Billin-Frye, who previously teamed up with Wendie Old in The Groundhog Day Book of Facts and Fun, adds her comical and spooky illustrations to the text.
Coyote Columbus Story Author/Illustrator: Thomas King, William Kent Monkman (Illustrator) Publisher: Groundwood Books Age Range: 4 to 8 From the publisher: Coyote, the trickster, creates the world and all the creatures within it. She is able to control all events to her advantage until a funny-looking red-haired man named Columbus changes her plans. He is unimpressed by the wealth of moose, turtles and beavers in Coyote's land. Instead, he is interested in the human beings he can take to sell in Spain. Native American author Thomas King reinterprets the entire Columbus conquest mythology as a trickster tale, making the point that history is influenced by the culture of the reporter. This delightful book has been nominated for a Governor General's Literary Award.
Toy Farmer Author/Illustrator: Andrew Pelletier, Scott Nash (Illustrator) Publisher: Penguin Group Age Range: 4 to 8 From the publisher: In the attic, Jed finds an old toy tractor with a miniature farmer in the driver's seat. It seems just like any other toy but then amazing things happen. First, Jed's bedroom carpet begins to sprout tiny green shoots. Then a pumpkin appears on a vine. It grows and GROWS, until it is big enough to win first prize at the county fair. When Jed returns home with his ribbon, the mysterious farmer is a toy once again or is it? Scott Nash's inventive art, complete with vintage toys, adds a nostalgic feel to the magic.
