Before I Was Your Mother Author/Illustrator: Kathryn Lasky, LeUyen Pham (Illustrator) Publisher: Harcourt Publication Date: April 2007 Age Range: 3 to 7 From the publisher: To Katie, it seems as if her mother has always been her mother, with her grocery lists, her purse full of bills to pay and her boring, sensible shoes. But when her mother reveals that she once was a girl who bossed her little brother, wore firefighter boots to bed and dreamed grand ballerina dreams, Katie realizes that she and her mother might be alike after all. This humorous, warmhearted blend of past and present celebrates the special love mothers and daughters share.
Frog Prince Author/Illustrator: Retold by Kathy-Jo Wargin, Jacob Grimm, Wilhem Grimm, Anne Y. Gilbert (Illustrator) Publisher: Mitten Press, Ann Arbor Media Group Publication Date: March 2007 Age Range: 4 to 8 Kathy-Jo Wargin carefully researched the Grimms tale of the Frog Prince and has done a delightful job with her retelling. Her words are brought to life with the beautifully detailed illustrations of Anne Yvonne Gilbert. When the beautiful princess accidently tosses her golden ball into a well, an ugly frog offers to retrieve it, for a price. The princess agrees to let him share her meal and bed and sit by her side, but then wants to go back on her word. The king makes her stick to her promise, which she wont regret when the frog turns into a handsome prince. We look forward to more books of Mitten Presss new series of classic fairy tales. JK
The Night Before Summer Camp Author/Illustrator: Natasha Wing, Mindy Pierce (Illustrator) Publisher: Penguin Group Publication Date: May 2007 Age Range: 4 to 8 From the publisher: The first day of summer camp is almost here, and one little camper doesnt know what to expect. For a while everything is hunkydory until rest time rolls around and he gets a bad case of nervous butterflies. But an unlikely friend appears out of the crowd and reassures him that the best cure for the summertime blues is tons of summertime fun! A sweetly reassuring story, once again told in verse to the meter of Clement Moores classic.
Woody and Maggie Walk Across America Author/Illustrator: Bernie Harberts, Danila Devins (Illustrator) Publisher: RiverEarth Publishing, riverearth.com Age Range: 5 to 10 Adventurer Bernie Harberts has created a unique childrens book about his equally unique trek across the U.S. with his mule and pony. The book cleverly details the trip from both the human point of view and that of the animals. You will be amazed at what Woody and Maggie think of Bernies tipi! Fun, bright illustrations by painter Danila Devins round out this interesting book. Author Bernie Harberts has also sailed around the world on his sailboat and is currently planning a new mule adventure from Canada to Mexico. We can only hope he will create another childrens book to chronicle his experience. JK
