Old Elm Speaks: Tree Poems Author/Illustrator: Kristine OConnell George, Kate Kiesler (Illustrator) Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company Age Range: 5 to 8 From the publisher: This tree across the stream is a trickier bridge than it might seem... The author of The Great Frog Race and Other Poems has created a collection of short poems that celebrate trees and the amazing variety of ways they touch our lives. Deceptively simple verses reveal what trees think about and what they say to one another, as well as how they look and all the things they do for us. Humor and an unerring ear for the sounds of language make these poems an irresistible read-aloud; the luminous oil paintings evoke a country setting and the children who enjoy it through the year. Kristine OConnell George, recipient of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award and Promising Poet Award, gives poetry workshops for children. She lives in Agoura, California. Kate Kiesler has illustrated numerous picture books, including The Great Frog Race and Other Poems. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

When we Reduce the number of different things we throw away such as plastic bags we help to keep the land where we live clean and the water that we drink fresh. It is also a good idea to Reuse, for example, by finding new uses for hand-me-downs that we might otherwise be tempted to throw away. And we can Recycle things like paper, cans and bottles by placing them in collection areas where they can be picked up and made into new and useful things. Remembering these three R words is a good way for us to help make our planet a good place to live.
