According to the publisher, this is the only picture book available about the father of genetics and his pea plants! This book tells the story of Gregor Mendel, a boy so fascinated with learning that he would go hungry just for the opportunity to nourish his brain at school. From his humble start as the son of a farmer who barely could afford an education, to a friar living, working and learning in an abbey, Bardoe thoughtfully relates the background of Mendel. The book does an excellent job of explaining Mendels experiments, using beautiful pictures and bright diagrams to illustrate his work with yellow and green peas. An inspirational book, and though the subject matter is complicated, the author does an excellent job making it understandable for younger readers.
The book was produced in conjunction with the exhibit Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics, currently at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois (www.fieldmuseum.org).
