Hat Tricks Count: A Hockey Number Book Author/Illustrator: Matt Napier, Melanie Rose (Illustrator) Publisher: Sleeping Bear Press Publication Date: October 2005 Age Range: 4 to 10 Sleeping Bear Press has a popular series of sports alphabet books, but Hat Tricks Count is the first attempt at a childrens picture book about the numbers of sports. Author Matt Napier does an excellent job of making numbers fun and explaining the sport and history of hockey. Each number features a short rhyme for younger readers, but also a section of expository text with more in-depth text for more advanced readers. This is an excellent technique for making the book relevant to a wide age range, from four on up. Any age hockey fan will enjoy the facts and figures highlighted by lively action-packed illustrations by Melanie Rose.
