Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

1. Make sure costumes are safe, with large eye holes and ventilation. Also make sure that the child will not trip on the costume. Flame-retardant costumes are best. Make sure any props the child uses are safe ones!

2. Be safe when carving your pumpkin! Kids like to help, but only give them safe jobs, such as scooping out the insides or drawing a face on the pumpkin for you to carve out. Try using a chemical light or flashlight to light up your jack-o-lantern. If you do prefer to use a candle, make sure that it is out of the way so that costumes will not come in contact with it.

3. An adult or responsible teenager should accompany younger children when trick or treating. And be sure to take a flashlight!

4. Stress to your children that they should only trick or treat at homes where they know the family, and to stay in your own neighborhood. Only go to houses that have their porch light on, and never go inside a house.

5. Remind children of basic safety rules, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, not talking to strangers, or getting into cars.

6. Make sure you know the route your children are going to take, and that they know what time to be home.

7. Follow the trick-or-treating guidelines posted by your city or police department.

8. Make sure you check the candy and treats your kids collect before they eat them!

9. Make sure your older children know that trick-or-treating mischief, such as vandalism or animal cruelty, will not be tolerated. It is against the law and morally wrong.
