Have you ever heard the saying "fifteen minutes of fame?" If so, you already know something about artist Andy Warhol. He originated the term with his statement that "In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."

Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928, in Pennsylvania. His parents were Czech immigrants, and his father worked in a coal mine. Andy had an interest in art from a very young age. He took some free art classes as a teenager and then studied commercial art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. As a student, his first jobs were decorating
department store windows and teaching art part time. In 1949, he moved to New York City and began a successful career as a magazine illustrator.

In 1960, Andy Warhol made his first painting based on comic strip characters. However, he wanted to do something different when he found out that another artist also used comic book characters. A friend suggested that he paint objects that he loved, and he did. One of his most recognizable creations was of the Campbell's soup can. Andy really loved Campbell's soup he ate it almost very day for lunch! He also loved money and superstars, so these were often subjects of his paintings. He quickly became a leader in the world of Pop Art. Pop Art was a style of art that used images from popular culture and mass media, like cartoon characters and everyday items such as supermarket items.

Andy Warhol also introduced a new way of creating art. Some of his paintings were done by hand, but he also made silk-screen prints of photographs and colored them using stencils. He could mass-produce artwork this way, and his studio was called "The Factory." Andy Warhol also was an experimental filmmaker and did bizarre projects, such as a film of the Empire State Building that was eight hours long! He became a very famous artist and celebrity, but remained very close to his mother and went to church every day.
